The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course includes 11 Cardinal golfers

ROUND ONE AND TWO RESULTS:

By GoStanford.com at STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's golf shot a one-over 281 on Friday at Stanford Golf Course and will enter Saturday's final round of The Goodwin in second place. The Cardinal is chasing No. 8 Arizona State, whose 7-under 273 on Friday gave them a five-shot lead at 9-under heading into the third round. 

Individually, six Cardinal shot even-par or better on Friday, as conditions were sunny and fairly calm throughout the day. Barclay Brown led the way with a 2-under 68 on the day to move in to the top 20. Overall, freshmen Michael Thorbjornsen (T11, -2) and Karl Vilips (T15, -1) lead the way for Stanford. Vilips shot a 1-under 69 Friday morning.

Playing as an individual, Daulet Tuleubayev has fired back-to-back even-par 70s and is tied for 19th at even-par for the tournament. Freshman Jake Beber-Frankel is 2-over for the tournament and tied for 29th after an even-par 70 on Friday. Senior Nate Menon, playing as an individual, had Stanford's second-best round on Friday, tallying a 1-under 69.

Cardinal compete at famed Bandon Dunes Trails course in Oregon

Final Results

BANDON, Ore. - Stanford's Barclay Brown and David Snyder both fired 2-under 69s on Tuesday at Bandon Trails to move up the leaderboard. For Brown, a sophomore, he finished the week at the Bandon Dunes Championships tied for fifth at 4-under. Snyder finished tied for 16th at 3-over, but was a combined 1-under over the final 36 holes.

As a team, the Cardinal finished tied for sixth, moving up the leaderboard each of the final two rounds. 

For Brown, it was his third career Top-10 finish. He's now played 12 of his 22 collegiate rounds at par or better. For Snyder, his 69 marked his 30th collegiate round, out of 68, at par or better, and his 16th in the 60s. It was also his eighth career Top-20 finish.

Cabo Collegiate moved to San Antonio this season

FINAL RESULTS:

Overall, this second of the year tournament had to be a wake-up call for the team in playing a very difficult course, under tough conditions (especially the first day) against an elite field.  Finishing 60 shots  back in 14th place of Oklahoma had to be a disappointment for all involved.  The second day 295 total was the one bright spot but the first and third days were tough for all of our players.

No doubt, though, having a rough outcome clearly shows our players what they need to work on to get back to the form we know they can reach.  Given our talent and depth, we can expect a strong response by our team in the upcoming events.

Next up (March 7-9) in just a few days is going to be another difficult challenge at world famed Bandon Dunes Trails course on the Oregon coast, where wind and unique conditions will face our team.  Notable is that freshman Michael Thorbjornsen had great success at Bandon Dunes in the US Amateur last summer, when he came close to winning it all under high wind conditions.  Will be fun to watch how the team bounces back.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Freshman Michael Thorbjornsen was one of just 12 individuals in the entire 88-player field at The Cabo Collegiate to fire a score under par, highlighting the day for Stanford men's golf with his 1-under 71 on Tuesday. As a team, the Cardinal was 29 strokes better than Tuesday, shooting a 7-over 295 to move up two spots at TPC San Antonio Oaks.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Stanford men's golf shot a 36-over 324 in the first round of The Cabo Collegiate on Monday, in what was cold and very windy conditions at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course. It leaves the Cardinal with some work to do over the final two days of the tournament, as it currently sits in 16th place. Only one team was better than 9-over on the day, as the conditions made for a tough round of golf. The field features 12 ranked teams, including six of the Top 10 in the Golfstat rankings.

2021 Season Begins with the Prestige at La Quinta, CA

FINAL ROUND RESULTS:

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Stanford men's golf fired a field-best 8-under 276 in Wednesday's final round at The Prestige, moving up 12 spots to finish the event in sixth place. It was the Cardinal's first even in nearly a year, since the 2020 Cabo Collegiate (March 1-3). Stanford was one of just two teams in the entire 24-team field under par on Wednesday. The team's 276 was tied for the best round of any team the entire week, 16 strokes better than the Cardinal's Monday round and 21 strokes better than Tuesday.

Sophomore Barclay Brown led four Cardinal under par on Wednesday, firing a 3-under 68 to jump 35 spots on the leaderboard. it was Brown's fourth career round in the 60s and his ninth career round (out of 18) at par or better. Senior Ashwin Arasu matched his best career round with a 69 on Wednesday, marking his fourth career round in the 60s.

Freshmen Karl Vilips, who shot a 2-under 69 for the second time in the tournament, paced all Cardinal in finishing tied for 12th. He totaled a 1-over 214 for the tournament, followed closely by fellow classmate Michael Thorbjornsen, whose 1-under 70 on Wednesday was his first round at Stanford under par. Thorbjornsen improved from 56th before the day to a tie for 21st to close the tournament.

ROUND TWO RESULTS:

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Playing in its first tournament in nearly a year, Stanford men's golf completed the second round of The Prestige on Tuesday. The tournament is being played on the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST. The Cardinal shot a 13-over 297 on Tuesday and moved up two spots.

Fifth-year senior Henry Shimp led the way on Tuesday, firing a 1-over 72 with five birdies in the round. He sits at 6-over, third on the team, and behind two freshmen in Karl Vilips (+3) and Michael Thorbjornsen (+4). Stanford will once again tee off at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

ROUND ONE RESULTS:

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Stanford men's golf, the defending NCAA champions, returned to the course on Monday for the first time in 349 days. The Cardinal last competed on March 3, 2020 at The Cabo Collegiate. Stanford shot a first-round, 8-over 292 to begin the 2021 season at The Prestige, being played at the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST. 

Stanford debuted two highly-touted freshmen in Karl Vilips and Michael Thorbjornsen, while rounding out the lineup with Ashwin Arasu, Barclay Brown and Henry Shimp. Both lived up to the hype in their debut rounds, with Vilips firing a 2-under 69 to lead the way with five birdies. He currently sits in a tie for seventh heading into the second round on Tuesday. Thorbjornsen tallied four birdies in the round and sits tied for 25th following his even-par 71.

BACKGROUND

The season uncertainly caused by the Covid Pandemic remains but the official start begins at The Prestige in La Quinta, CA played at the Greg Norman course at PGA West.  Stanford comes into the season as the defending national champions from the 2018-2019 season, as not championship was held in 2020.

The Cardinal brings an exciting new chapter to the team with the arrival of the #1 recruiting class in the country, led by two top five recruits, Karl Vilips and Michael Thorbjornsen.  Karl and Michael will be in the starting lineup along with sophomore Barclay Brown and two seniors, Henry Shimp and Adwin Arasu.

The strong field includes a total of 24 teams.  Among the teams, as ranked by the Golf Channel, are preseason #1 ranked ASU, #18 Arizona, #19 Stanford and #28 North Carolina.  

As individuals, the field will include the preseason #5 ranked Kevin You, senior from ASU, #6 ranked William Mouw, sophomore from Pepperdine, #13 ranked sophomore David Puig from ASU, #19 ranked freshman Karl Vilips from Stanford and #21 ranked freshman Michael Thorjornsen, also from Stanford.

LOS CABOS, Mexico – Highlighted by freshman Barclay Brown's second-place finish, Stanford Men's Golf placed sixth at the 2020 Cabo Collegiate. The Cardinal finished the tournament at 1-over, as No. 9 Arizona State won the event. The field consisted of 14 teams ranked inside the Top 50, with the Cardinal besting No. 25 Oklahoma State, No. 29 California, No. 30 LSU, No. 32 Ole Miss, No. 39 Houston, No. 42 Alabama, No. 47 Florida State and No. 50 Arkansas. All five teams who finished in front of the Cardinal are ranked inside the Top 20.
 
"It was another solid week by the guys," The Knowles Family Director of Men's Golf Conrad Ray said. "It was great to see Barclay (Brown) have a really nice week and lead us individually. The conditions were very tough on the back nine yesterday, as well as today, and our guys hung in there with some of the top teams in the country. We've made a lot of progress the last six weeks and we're excited to get back out there again in our match against Illinois (March 21) and then host The Goodwin (March 26-28)."
 
A week after finishing third at The Prestige Individual, Brown registered the best finish of his young career, tying for second. Brown shot even-par 71s in Sunday's first round and again in the final round Tuesday, sandwiched around a seven-under 64 on Monday.

LOS CABOS, Mexico – Stanford Men's Golf moved up seven spots on Monday at the Cabo Collegiate, shooting a 14-under 270. The 14-under was tied for the eighth-best round to par in school history and was the third-best round in tournament history. It was also the best round in the field on Monday by four strokes.
 
Stanford is now tied for fourth (-9) heading into the final day of action on Tuesday, just six strokes off Arizona's lead.
 
A week after shooting a seven-under 65 at The Prestige Individual, freshman Barclay Brown fired a seven-under 64 on Tuesday on Cabo del Sol Ocean Course. The 64 was tied for the 11th-best round in school history and the second-best round in tournament history. Brown is now tied for the individual lead with Baylor's Johnny Keefer and Arizona's Trevor Werbylo heading into the final round on Tuesday.

FINAL RESULTS:
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Led by sophomore Daulet Tuleubayev's career-best finish of tied for sixth, Stanford Men's Golf finished eighth at The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab. The Cardinal edged out ranked opponents such as LSU, Northwestern and Arkansas en route to shooting a 2-under 850 on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West. The Cardinal posted a 5-under 279 on Wednesday.
 
"I was happy with how the guys battled all week," The Knowles Family Director of Men's Golf Conrad Ray said. "We improved every round. The Norman Course was a great test of golf and for us to have a few guys towards the top of the leaderboard is a positive step."
 
Tuleubayev was steady all week, as all three rounds were under par. He shot a first- and third-round 69 with a second round at 1-under 70. He bested his previous best finish of tied for seventh at the Pac-12 Championship last season.
 
"The individual tournament also provided some great experience for Barclay, Ashwin and David to get some quality reps on a challenging course," Ray continued. It was fun to see them have a chance to win."
 
As a team, Stanford played the par 3s at 1-over, the second-best score in the field. The Cardinal's 177 pars were tied for second-most in the field.
